Come and join us for an evening with Microsoft MVP, Shahid Iqbal. Shahid is an experienced international speaker, previously speaking at NDC in Oslo and Sydney, with over a decade of experience in .NET.
Shahid works with companies to help migrate their existing applications and processes to the Cloud. He is a passionate proponent of Cloud Native approaches and employing technologies such as Azure and Kubernetes to solve modern development problems.
Join us as Shahid talks through solving microservices challenges on the Kubernetes platform.
Developing microservices based applications is a hot trend in our industry. This talk introduces a “journey” to microservices and highlights some of the new problems that are being created by adopting such an architecture.
We then step through how we can leverage cloud native technologies such as Kubernetes and the even trendier topic of service meshes such as Istio to try and address some of these new problems.
This talk, along with demos, will cover many topics in an area which is rapidly evolving. However we’ll try and focus on the fundamental problems, and demonstrate tools that can help make the experience better or simply easier to manage.
Also joining us is Stephen Agnew – a Software Developer based at NCFE in Newcastle upon Tyne. Stephen will give a short presentation on azure service fabric mesh, a fully managed microservices platform for business-critical applications. The talk will highlight some key benefits of using service fabric mesh as a container orchestrator, including a demonstration of how quickly applications can be scaled out.
By the end of the talk, the audience should feel confident that they have the knowledge and tools to get started using service fabric mesh, including deployment of containerised applications and docker images using ARM templates.
Some knowledge of microservices, containers and Kubernetes is useful but not essential – we’ll cover the basic topics.

As the event falls on Blue Monday, we will be welcoming donations for local mental health charity, Mental Health Concern. Based in the North East, the charity supports people facing mental health challenges, from anxiety to isolation to late-stage dementia. Mental Health Concern exists to improve the wellbeing of every person it sees, to create meaningful and sustainable change for communities and work with the government to improve the quality of care available nationwide.
