Durham University, on behalf of the NINE DTP has organised a panel and networking event to discuss ‘For better or worse: AI and society’ at PROTO: The Emerging Technology Centre, Gateshead.
The panel will be chaired by Phil Jackman, Director of Guerrilla Working and includes a range of experts in the fields of artificial intelligence and social sciences:
- Noura Al-Moubayed – Durham University, Computing Sciences
- Pete Daykin – CEO of Word Nerds
- Phil Garnett – York Management School, Operations Management and Business Analysis
- Ahmed Salhin – Principal Data Scientist at Sage
We’ll be talking about the role of artificial intelligence in society and how social science research contributes to the development of AI. The event will provide a platform for audience members to ask our panel members key questions and to expand and develop their network.

With the Government’s announcement of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund there are bountiful opportunities for industry and academia to join forces and collectively tackle the big societal and industrial challenges of today.
The long-term plan of the strategy is to raise productivity and earning power in the UK. The fund is a core pillar in the Government’s commitment to increase funding in research and development by £4.7 billion over four years to strengthen UK science and business.
Collaboration is key to accessing this funding; therefore the need to build partnerships early on in the conception of a project is vital but also bringing relevant experts into an established project could open new doors for progression and funding opportunities.
The ‘For better or worse: AI and society’ event aims to foster a culture of collaboration between social science researchers and industry with opportunities for discussion, networking and new learning.
