About Peter Calvert

Question 1

What inspires you to get involved with Dynamo?

Having spent nearly 15 years in the North East tech sector, I’ve seen first-hand the value of community, collaboration, and ecosystems. They support founders to start, businesses to scale, and the region to collectively succeed. Being a part of the Dynamo gives me the opportunity to contribute back into that digital ecosystem in a number of ways.

I’m a passionate Teessider, a place that sometimes gets overlooked in the “North East” conversations, and I’ve made it part of my mission during my time on the Dynamo board to help connect those across the entire region, for the benefit of everyone.

Question 2

What does your day-to-day job outside of Dynamo entail?

As Managing Director of Embeddable, I work with investors as a subject matter expert for tech, supporting them through their due diligence processes and as an advisor to businesses in their portfolio. I also work with a handful of startup and scaling businesses at any given time as their fractional Chief Technology Officer to help them explore and validate opportunities and to solve problems.

My background is in software engineering, so I still like to get “on the tools” and involved in the building of tech that has the potential to change businesses, reshape industries, and improve people’s day-to-day experiences.

Question 3

What three achievements are you most proud of in your career so far, and why are you proud of them?

  1. Joining the Dynamo Advisory Board, of course!
  2. Embeddable was incorporated two weeks after my daughter was born (she really was my “now or never” moment) in early-2023. One of our very first clients came to us with an idea on a piece of paper for a product to revolutionise part of the legal sector, and within ~2 years they’d launched, raised investment, and grew to the point they could hire a full-time CTO to take over the reigns from our fractional work. They validated exactly what I wanted Embeddable to do as a fractional when I first set out on my business journey.
  3. In 2018, I joined a quickly-growing paid advertising agency, right around the time that Google launched their “Comparison Shopping Service” programme. We were one of the first 30 businesses in Europe to become a certified partner for this and subsequently worked with Google to evolve the programme. Our shopping service platform handled over 7,000,000 products, allowed businesses to save hundreds of thousands of pounds on their advertising spend, and continues to run today.

Question 4

How do you stay informed about tech sector industry trends and advancements?

I’m fortunate to travel regularly for my work and get involved with communities, incubators, and other programmes that have a tech focus, which keeps me up-to-date, and always makes me grateful for just how much we have going on, on our doorstep in the North East. Like most of us, I (sometimes begrudgingly) keep tabs on LinkedIn and of course read the Dynamo members insights.

Question 5

What hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

I’m a father to a three-year old daughter, who naturally rules the roost, so my free time is largely spent between soft plays, the park, the beach, or anywhere else she likes to go! I’m a big believer in looking after the body to look after the mind and have a genuine interest in all things fitness, and I’m  a Middlesbrough fan (and season ticket holder) for my sins.

Question 6

Three reasons why people and businesses should get involved with Dynamo from your perspective

  • Be a part of a genuinely wonderful community, with opportunities to collaborate with, and to support (and be supported by) others,
  • Play a part in putting the North East on the map at national and international scale for our work in tech,
  • Be the change you want to see. Dynamo is an advocate on behalf of its members – by being involved and sharing your perspective, we’ll work together to continuously improve the tech landscape in our region.
