Young Spielbergs help showcase North East tech

A series of videos produced by students from Gateshead College are set to shine a light on the fantastic career opportunities available within the North East tech sector.

Three video production students have been working with the team at Dynamo North East over recent months to produce a series of videos showcasing the wide range of job opportunities available in the industry.

The assignment included drafting and asking the interview questions, capturing head shot and b-roll footage and conducting all of the editing.

Employers Apexon, BJSS, Tharsus and Waterstons all got involved in the project, with the students given a unique chance to visit each of their offices, speak to those at the helm and film on site.

Sarah Glancey (shown right alongside the Gateshead College students), Membership Support Officer at Dynamo North East, said: “It’s been fantastic working with the Gateshead College students on this project.

“One of the key challenges facing the industry is a lack of awareness of the wide variety of roles available, especially among young people who may not realise the breadth of opportunities in tech, so we tasked the students with creating a series of engaging videos to help address this, and we couldn’t be any happier with the result.

“Some of the people they interviewed were very senior, and for some of the students involved, it was the first time they’d been in such a workplace, but you would never have thought it. They were an absolute pleasure to work with.”

Gateshead College is a long-standing member of Dynamo North East and the project is the latest in a string of collaborative projects between the two organisations to help bridge the gap between young people and industry.

Deni Chambers, Director of Curriculum and Skills at Gateshead College, said: “Collaboration between education and industry is key to preparing the next generation for the workforce, and our ongoing work with Dynamo North East is helping us do just that.

“By connecting students with businesses, we have been able to give them a unique insight into career opportunities in an incredibly exciting and rewarding industry, while helping to foster relationships that could even lead to them securing internships or employment in the future.

“It’s been a fantastic project to be involved in for both our pupils and staff and we look forward to working on more projects like this with Dynamo as we look to the future.”

As the North East’s largest tech business network, Dynamo North East is committed to helping grow and champion the industry, particularly when it comes to skills and futureproofing the workforce.

Allison Cummins, Senior Manager Talent Development at Apexon, said: “Being part of the collaborative project between Dynamo, Gateshead College, and Apexon has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

“Watching Gateshead College students bring their creativity and skills to life while filming our Apexon employees was truly inspiring.

“This initiative not only showcased the diverse experiences within our team but also aimed to ignite a passion for technology in the next generation.

“It’s heartening to see how our stories can help shape the future talent pipeline and encourage young people to pursue careers in the tech sector.”
