Give us a brief overview of your organisation
The NHSBSA is an Arm’s Length Body of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), we provide a range of at scale, national business services, systems and platforms to support primary care, the NHS workforce and services directly to citizens.
Through our Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) expertise, we’re transforming some of the biggest digital services in the UK, including NHS Jobs, NHS exemption checking and digital maternity exemption.
What are the benefits of basing your business in the North East?
The North East is a great place to be but we’re a national organisation with offices in Newcastle, Fleetwood, Eastbourne, Middlebrook and Wakefield. The benefit of being in all these places is that they are truly reflective of the customers we serve. They’re all great!
What have the past 2 years taught you?
The past 2 years have taught us that we’re quick to react. As part of the government response to COVID-19 we took responsibility for stepping up a range of services to support health and care, including:
- sending NHS 111 self-isolation texts
- informing at risk patients
- developing a text messaging service to ask people who’d beaten COVID-19 to register to donate antibodies
- providing coronavirus helpline support to callers ringing the 111 service

What are your business objectives for the next 12 months?
We’re an ambitious organisation and our objective is always to support the NHS and the wider health and care system. In the next 12 months we’ll be focussing on our big ambitions:
- to transform platforms and services that support the career pathway of health and care colleagues
- to support the NHS to deliver greater efficiencies
- to reduce disparities in health and care
We are the NHS supporting the NHS.
What are your hopes for the future of the North East’s tech and digital industry?
Our hope is that the North East’s Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) sector continues to grow. We’re looking forward to investing in early talent and helping them flourish while also encouraging our experienced talent to explore new opportunities and technologies. We will create a supportive community where our experienced employees can support new recruits and still gain further experience in their own discipline.
Why did you join Dynamo?
We’re always looking for networking opportunities and a chance to talk to like-minded people across the public and private sectors. We’re also eager to show that there’s more than one side to the NHS and to celebrate our services.
