Give us a brief overview of your organisation

We’re a leading commercial law firm that supports clients across the public and private sectors, including local authorities, technology, sport and charity.

We have a particular specialism in technology law, and our digital & technology team is ranked in Tier 1 by independent directory Legal 500 UK. We advise clients on everything from developing and selling technology to trademark and brand protection, patents, acquisition, ownership and licencing.

What are the benefits of basing your business in the North East?

We’ve been operating in the North East since 1920 and still work out of a single-site office in Newcastle, helping regional, national and international clients with their legal needs.

We’re passionate about the region and committed to being part of its growth. We support some fantastic regional clients, such as Tees Valley Combined Authority and Global Bridge, So Post and Armatus Oceanic, who are doing amazing work raising the profile of the North East as a great place to do business.

The North East tech and digital sector is strong, established and exciting. As a North East based commercial law firm, it is critical to support this industry as it continues to develop and grow.


How does your organisation strive to make a positive impact on the local community, and why is this important to your overall mission?

We truly believe that being a responsible business is everybody’s business! Care is one of our core values; we put it at the heart of everything we do.

It’s extremely important to us that, as a local business, we use our resources to significantly impact our communities. Community forms one of six strategic objectives of our firm’s overall 5-year plan launched in 2022. We’re prioritising it equally with other objectives such as profitability, people and performance.

Last year we celebrated 20 years of our Muckle Community Fund at The Community Foundation. Every year we donate 1% of our annual profits to help local charities focussing on supporting young people, overcoming disadvantage, improving social mobility and also causes close to the hearts of our people.

It’s one of the strengths of this region that charities are embedded in our communities and we’re lucky to have had the opportunity to build long-lasting relationships with some of them over the last 20 years.

What are your hopes for the future of the North East’s tech and digital industry?

Post-pandemic tech adoption and reliance have increased exponentially, and that will only continue. No sector is left unaffected or unchallenged by it. The North East is extremely well-placed to take the opportunities that arise from tech adoption and flourish as a result.


What are your business objectives for the next 12 months?

In 2022 we launched our five-year plan, which centres around being “successful, forward-thinking and distinctive. Caring deeply about our people, clients and community.”

It was important that we balanced objectives such as profitability with being a value-led business that looks after our people. Our people are our greatest asset; without them and their continued commitment, we wouldn’t be able to provide our clients the best possible legal services. It’s so important that we continue to invest in the development and well-being of our staff to allow us to grow and develop.

We recently achieved Investors in People Platinum status and were placed 2nd in the world rankings of legal activities sector employers.

A very large part of tech and digital legal work relates to use and processing of personal data. The Muckle data and digital team is a growth area for the practice with an already established reputation in the space. The firm is keen to expand its clientbase in the data protection space and will be focussed on this over the coming 12 months.


Why did you join Dynamo?

We’re passionate about supporting regional tech growth. Dynamo allows us to connect with a network of people with the same goals and enables us to share best practices and knowledge.

Dynamo is a great showcase for some of the region’s tech and digital businesses and projects and Muckle has been involved in supporting since its inception. The team have also worked closely with Sunderland Software City over recent years both in terms of events and training and the merger of the two last year is a very positive development for the North East.
